Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore consumer¡¯s experience of patient safety in hospital qualitatively.

Method: Three individuals with a recent hospitalization participated in?depth interviews. Three participants described about their specific hospital experiences related to safety. Colaizzi¡¯s phenomenological method was used to analyze data.
Result: Four basic themes were identified: 1) Insufficient information: All participants felt unsafe when they had to make decision with insufficient information. 2) Trust with medical staffs: All participants worried about over supply of expensive treatments. 3) Competency and experiences of medical staff: Participants worried about the mistakes done by medical staffs due to fatigue, overwork, and lack of experiences. 4) Risk of infection and physical injury: Participants expressed worries about unclean environments, hand hygiene of medical staffs, risk of fall, and threaten from unknown people.

Conclusion: Participants agreed that they couldn¡¯t ask medical professionals anything even if unsafe procedure performed them. Therefore, it is important that healthcare professionals should have attitude on patient safety and permit them to ask any questions related to patient safety freely. This study results may help to understand how consumers¡¯experiences on safety influence their overall perceptions of the quality of care they received.
